Lampasas has entered the ever growing high school fishing sport. An interest meeting was hosted Dec. 6.

“I just started this year,” Badger Angler Club President Leslie Grier said. “We were trying to get experience and knowledge before we started it here. We just kind of decided we’d do it on our own.”

The team will fish for almost all the species of bass competitively.

“I’ve grown up fishing my whole life and my son has a real passion for it,” Grier said.

Competitive anglers will mostly practice on their own.

“We have to make sure that we have enough captains per angler because if we have too many anglers and not enough boats then kids can’t fish,” Grier said.

The team will participate with the Faith Angler Network and the Texas High School Bass Association.

“The High School Bass will just be for high school students and the Faith Angler [grades] 6-12,” Grier said.

There will be multiple scholarship opportunities for participants.

“We’re also going to do a scholarship for an angler so that they’re going to be a part of the team if they can’t pay for it,” Grier said.

Junior Austin Zuniga said fishing is a good outlet to help people relax.

“It’s a calming thing and, as long as you’re being responsible, it’s a good thing,” he said.
