With Homecoming week came the annual academic period door decorating contest. This year, the theme was Candy Land to correlate with the pep rally, but classes were also challenged to incorporate LHS and  gold for childhood cancer awareness.

“The theme was fun to decorate for,” senior Dani Claussen said. “I like that we were asked to add gold for childhood cancer also. I think that it made the entire contest more significant and meaningful.”

The first place winner, announced Oct. 2 during academic period, was Mrs. Kuehne’s class.

“When we won we were all very excited because we had worked very hard to get it done,” junior Alyze Gauna said. “Although, I would like to give credit to her other classes because they also helped with cutting stuff out, putting it up, and doing some Photoshopping. That’s another reason why we believed that we had deserved to win. We had used our skills that we learned in that class to make something that we could have fun with and be proud of.”

Second place went to Mrs. Cervantes’ academic, and third place to Mrs. Thacker’s class.

“Everything that was on the paper is a collaboration of things in the candy category, going along with the title that we included on the paper, ‘Ms. Cervantes’ class is sweet,’” sophomore Olivia Zmolik said. “Despite the random assortment of decorations, the mistake with the paper layout, and the confusion of different personalities clashing, we all worked really hard and I think we accomplished a lot. You can really tell how much effort went into it.”

Many classes spent the entire week brainstorming and putting together ideas for the contest, including junior Marissa Marez, who works in the counseling center as an aide.

“It was a really good experience that brought all of us together,” Marez said. “The aides from each class and Mrs. Davis took turns working on it, so we had a lot off ideas. I think that the outcome was great, and we had a lot of fun making it.”
