A generational achievement of making it to region in tennis has leveled up as two sisters make it to state as a team.
Senior Caroline White and freshman Madelynn White competed at state in tennis May 7-8 in San Antonio after winning 36 games throughout Regionals.
“Going to state is a feeling that’s indescribable because I’ve been so close the last two years and finally making it with someone I love makes it so much better,” Caroline said. “Madelynn has played so hard this semester, and I couldn’t have asked for anything more.”
The girls played a total of 39 games, only losing 3. The last time a student went to state in tennis was 2017.
“To win a match you must win two sets,” Caroline said. “In these two sets are games which have points in them. Madelynn and I were able to win two straight sets without having to play out a third set which would have been six more games.”
To prepare for their matches, they practiced everyday since the summer with drills, match play and stations.
“The girls worked really hard this past summer; anywhere from 4-6 days a week,” father and assistant tennis coach Eric White said. “We worked on the physical and mental side of tennis, set some goals and did what we could to reach them. Once Madelynn and Caroline got on the same page, they have been a hard team to beat.”
They are coached by high school tennis coach Kenneth Peiser and also their father.
“Having my dad as a coach wasn’t always the easiest thing for me because I was stubborn and couldn’t take the help he was giving me,” Caroline said. “I’ve known Peiser my whole life, so it’s almost like my dad but I don’t have to go home with him.”
Madelynn said having her dad as a coach is nice because he understands how she reacts to different situations.
“He’s able to talk me through some things,” Madelynn said. “Like, if one of my shots aren’t working, he is able to explain what’s going on well.”
Peiser coached White when he was in high school and he only made it to the regional level.
“As of right now, it’s the best that has happened to me in tennis,” White said. “I never made it to state, so to have two of my three girls make it, I couldn’t be happier! When they won the point that guaranteed them going, it was overwhelming.”
