The baseball team traveled to Copperas Cove Jan. 31 in their first scrimmage of the season.
“Going into the scrimmage I was wanting to see how the team would play together and how we would mesh,” senior Corbin Kepler said. “Our skillset and depth we have on the team this year will really help us going into district.”
Head baseball coach Chance Evans said the biggest skill he wants to teach the team at practices is situational awareness.
“There are so many different things that can happen in a baseball game,” he said. “With scrimmages coming up, we are trying to cover as many of those as we can.”
Evans said that pitching and fielding were solid, that they threw ten different pitchers and they all did great.
“It was a great outing for the first scrimmage,” he said. “We struggled a little at the plate but that will come with time and reps. The most impressive things was our focus and team chemistry on display.”
Senior Calvin Phelps treats scrimmages like real games, that way when the time comes he can perform for his team.
“I definitely couldn’t be here without my teammates and the defense behind me, especially my catcher Corbin Kepler,” he said.
With the success that last year’s season set, Evans’ goal is to go further.
“[I’m] looking forward to seeing the growth of this team over the next couple of weeks,” he said. “We appreciate all of the support from Badger Nation and look forward to seeing you all at the ballpark!”
The season is still early, but success can continue to grow as team chemistry strengthens.
“I think this year will be great as long as we keep learning and improving throughout the time we have,” Kepler said. “The season is only as [long] as we make it.”
