The Lampasas National Art Honors Society (LNAHS) will paint a mural in the cafeteria before the end of the school year to replace the art that used to hang there.
“This will be the first student-led mural at LHS,” art teacher Judith Brown said. “I was a muralist and professional artist before I became a teacher, and my goal is to teach students how to use their talents to provide for themselves as an adult.”
The plans for this mural have been in the works for a while. The original paintings had been there since around 2010 but were taken down at the beginning of the school year.
“How it came about is that one wall in the cafeteria is just weird and a lot of the paintings were outdated and one of them fell and broke, so we were just like we need to do something our school has pride in,” assistant principal Ryan Race said.
Students in LNAHS will submit their concept designs and vote on a final design, and if necessary, they will combine elements into one design.
“The theme for the art is still undecided, but it will probably be something related to Badger Nation,” Race said. “We want to give some ownership to our students. Basically, [Principal Paul] Weinheimer is trying to refresh the school and allow the students to make it their own.”
Originally, Visual Arts Scholastic Event finalist Daphne Davenport was approached to design the mural, but they opened it up to be a club event.
“I was surprised,” senior Daphne Davenport said. “The responsibility was a little overwhelming, but as a collaborative project with Art Club it feels like a much more manageable task.”
In the next few weeks, LNAHS will white wash the wall.
“Then, Art Club will take the mural over and just paint,” Race said. “We’ll probably have some scaffolding and it might get in the way for a little bit, but it’s going to be awesome.”
