Seniors Paige Rutland and Ignazio Sanchez won a surprise prize drawing done at the senior class meeting September 3. The prize drawing, held as an attendance reward, allowed Rutland and Sanchez to design their own Nike Dunks, which are set to arrive in October.
“I think they were only planning on doing a couple of drawings throughout the year, but [district attendance officer Kyle] Black said our attendance had been good, so he did a surprise drawing right there,” Sanchez said. “When I heard I had gotten drawn, I didn’t really know what to say, since it was all up to luck. All the same, it felt nice to win something.”
The two winners were each provided with a link to the Nike online store, where they created custom designs for the shoes on their Chromebooks with help from Black before placing the order.
“It was a really fun experience,” Rutland said. “I’m so excited to get to wear them! My favorite attendance rewards have to be the shoes and the off-campus lunches.”
The prize drawings are intended to act as incentives for maintaining high attendance rates. Rutland and Sanchez both spoke about an interest in this approach to promote student activity.
“I think it’s cool that they’re rewarding our attendance more,” Sanchez said. “It could encourage more people to get involved and stuff, if nothing else than to put their name in the drawing pool.”
As in previous years, off-campus lunch will continue to be offered as an attendance reward alongside other prize drawings. For some students, the rewards act as a way to feel involved and included in school activities. They provide incentives for students and excitement for those involved.
“These rewards are very exciting,” Rutland said. “I think these rewards are going to be very effective in the future.”
Sanchez expressed similar feelings.
“It just feels cool to win something, you know?” he said.
