District Extends Early Release Days To Full Days To Meet New TEA Requirement

This is the updated district calendar that does not include any early release days.

Superintendent Chane Rascoe notified the district Aug. 31 that the three scheduled early release days throughout the school year have been changed to full days due to a new TEA policy that CTE (Career and Technology Education) courses have to be 45 minutes daily.

We received notification, on August 7, 2023, that TEA had made changes to the CTE instructional minute requirement to a minimum of 45-minute class periods,” Rascoe said in an email to LISD staff. “Our previous calendar had a total of 170 student days in the 2023-24 district calendar with 3 of them being early release days which do not meet the 45-minute minimum requirement.”

Rascoe chose to extend the early release days to meet the new TEA requirements.

“Kids aren’t going to want to stay the full day,” senior Vanessa Mason said.

Administrators are still in the process of rescheduling semester exams that fall on two of the days that have been changed.

“Students should have a say on policies,” Mason said. “The exam [schedule] is going to be changed. What if someone had to leave early for work or for family and they can’t because it wasn’t a half day?”
