Cosmetology put strands of hair tinsel in peoples’ hair for $2 a strand Sept. 5.
“I want to help build school spirit,” cosmetology teacher Nicole Sanchez said. “We love to show our school and other programs support. Many cheerleaders, Flames and even football players participate in our program, so I feel it is important we show that you can be involved in all things you feel passionate about from sports to helping others build their confidence! Plus, who doesn’t love a little sparkle in their hair?”
Sanchez said all the money they gained will be put back into the cosmetology program.

“We use [the money] for things that help our stylists feel more confident and more prepared to enter the real salon world,” Sanchez said. “From higher quality tools to small prizes to incentivize participation during class time.”
Cosmetology will continue to do the hair tinsel on pep rally days.
“In addition to that, we also open our ‘Badger Cuts & Claws’ salon to the community once a month,” Sanchez said. “This helps our students get some real-life experience and also helps raise funds for our program.”
Sanchez said her favorite part of the fundraiser was the discussion that came afterward.
“Our future stylists get so much inspiration from helping others feel more confident when they leave their chair,” Sanchez said.
Senior Samantha Sturgeon said her favorite part of the fundraiser was spending time with friends.
“I enjoyed seeing people’s reaction afterwards,” she said. “Some guys giggled at the tinsel while most girls gasped at how pretty it was! It was really fun seeing people light up after the tinsel was added.”
Sturgeon said cosmetology raised a little over $700.

“I would absolutely do this again,” Sturgeon said. “I met so many people doing this. It was awesome.”
Sturgeon said it was cool to see all the different people who got their hair done.
“Everything went really smoothly and Mrs. Sanchez even made it into a fun game,” Sturgeon said. “The person with the most clients got beauty bucks, so it was also a fun competition between the girls.”
Sophomore Isabella Jurado said her favorite part about getting her hair done was the environment. She said all the girls were super sweet and they all talked even though they didn’t know each other.
“I wanted to get hair tinsel because I’ve never had it and I really wanted to try it because I love the way it looks in other people’s hair,” Jurado said. “I got 4 strands. I got one strand of silver tinsel in the blond part of my hair and three strands of pink tinsel in the black parts of my hair.”
