Biology and English I co-teacher Alison Garner hosted the first science club meeting Nov. 6. The first topic was the bubonic plague.
“We are going to cover a particular topic in different areas of science, such as plague for microbiology, crystal formation for geology, comets for astronomy, blood typing and possibly dissections for anatomy and physiology, global warming for environmental science, energy production and experiments for chemistry,” Garner said. “We will also delve a little deeper into topics taught in biology.”
Garner said she created the club because students in her biology classes generally seemed intrigued, asking plenty of questions about a variety of topics.
“I’m a huge fan of microbiology, kind of biology as a whole,” sophomore Brooke Dupree said. “Astronomy is really cool. I’m not the best at chemistry class, but chemistry as a subject I think is really interesting.”
Science club meetings will occur every other Thursday after school from 3:30 to 4:30.
“I hope that any students who like science will come and check out the club,” Garner said.
Garner graduated with a Master’s degree in biology while concentrating in medical microbiology. Her favorite subjects in biology are microbiology and anatomy and physiology.
“I love anything to do with diseases, viruses, bacteria, immunology, physiology, etc,” she said. “I am very much a science nerd.”
With the exchanging topics rotating each meeting, students are looking forward to learning the vast science field.
“I definitely want to say this is a fun, fun topic,” Dupree said. “Science as a whole is just so freaking interesting! I would really, really, really, really recommend that people try to find the time to join this little group because, again, we’re talking about different topics.”
