School was canceled district wide Oct. 23 due to issues with water supply throughout Lampasas and Kempner.
“We recently have had two bad breaks that have had to be repaired,” assistant principal Ryan Race said. “During this time we had to miss a day of school due to not enough pressure to flush the toilets. Also, with any break there will be bacteria getting in the line and we have to have a boil notice.”
While school was closed, the city successfully fixed the water issues and classes resumed as normal the following day.
“The city had to call in a special unit from up north to come fix it,” Race said. “As far as I know, the issue is fixed.”
In response to the boil notice, the district bought bottled water for all the students and staff to drink while at school.
“I think the school did the best they could under the circumstances,” sophomore Avalyn Southard said. “They covered the water fountains to make sure we wouldn’t drink them, and they also provided us with water bottles in the cafeteria.”
The water line break not only affected students at school, but in some cases also it affected them at home.
“Because of the water issues, I wasn’t able to do a lot.” Southard said. “I had to go to my aunt’s house to shower. She lives in Copperas Cove and still had water. We also had to go to HEB to buy water bottles to make sure we had something to drink,”
Though the water issues were frustrating for many, Southard said it wasn’t all bad.
“If I’m honest, I was pretty happy,” Southard Said. “I was able to have extra time on my assignments and a day to just relax!”
