As a homecoming tradition, teachers compete in a door decorating contest. The contest revolves around the homecoming theme. This year’s theme was The Greatest Showman.
Spanish teacher Elma Garnett won this year’s door decorating contest. Garnett’s door design branched out into the halls with red and white triangular banners.
“I used butcher paper, my projector to trace out figures and ordered a few things off amazon,” Garnett said.
Garnett received help with the door decorating from past students and her academic students.
“I hope that next year we get the week before homecoming to decorate so that is already up for homecoming week,” Garnett said.
History teacher Danelle Ecker participates in the door decorating contest every year. She loves a competition and raising the school spirit.
“I had students from my academic and a couple of Key Club members help,” Ecker said. “Mrs. Kachel also helped the design and implementation of it.”
Ecker enjoyed having her students get involved in participating and creating the design.
Ecker’s door had red and white streamers giving off the circus feeling she aimed for. Beside her door on the wall were two pieces of large colored paper filled with cutouts of peanuts, red tickets, popcorn and circus animals.
“I came up with it by doing a little research on circus door decor and just ended up doing my own thing, while trying to implement the football team the best I could,” Ecker said.
Science teacher Jonathan Vanliew’s students chose the door inspiration and materials. They cut out white and black paper and attached it to Vanliew’s door.
“I think it’s just cool seeing the different designs that other students, those students for all different classes, come up with, and seeing everybody kind of get into the school spirit of homecoming week,” Vanliew said. “It’s just really about them working on something together, collaborating together.”
The contest brought together teachers and students through the teamwork and cooperation that is built to the pride and sense of achievement.
Senior Sandra Tamayo-Duran took notice of the door decorating contest this year.
“I think they’re definitely something new because last year they weren’t as hyped up as right now,” Tamayo-Duran said. “They’re just so big and eye-catching.”
