Boys basketball season has officially started. The first game of the season will be Tuesday in Eastside Memorial. The JV game starts at 6 p.m, and Varsity at 7:30 p.m.
“If we make the playoffs that would be 4 years in a row, and that has never happened before for LHS boys basketball,” head basketball coach Aaron Nuckles said.
Basketball had their first scrimmage Nov. 4 at 10 a.m, after practicing 3:30-5:30 everyday for a week.
“Practice is busy, hectic, fast paced and lots going on,” Nuckles said. “There are times when we slow it down and teach things, but we try to make it more difficult and challenging than the games are, so that we have seen it and done it before.”
Last year’s varsity team won 17 out of 35 games, giving them a win rate of 49%. They also won 3rd in district, making it the 2nd time in a row.
“We want to be a force to be reckoned with in the region 3 playoffs and represent the school and community the right way for as long as we can,” Nuckles said.
The basketball boys have been preparing since the end of last season. During the spring they focus 100% on non-basketball activities like the Wits, Speed, Agility program, and many of the players are a part of spring sports.
“I did SWAT over the summer, and I really felt like it got me ready for school again,” senior Jason Brock said.
The players and coaches have a very close relationship, as they spend a lot of time together with practice and games.
“We try to have very close relationships with our kids, and in turn we hope that builds the trust factor,” Nuckles said.
Throughout the season all the coaches try to keep the community close, as they do many team building events with the players and their families throughout the year.
“One that is new this season will be put on by our booster club on Dec. 14,” Nuckles said. “It is called MEET THE BADGERS.”
The game next Tuesday will be the start of the seniors last season.
“I have a passion for basketball, and I love going to the games and especially playing in them,” Brock said. “So I’m going to miss it very much.”
