The band’s marching show theme is Dia de los Muertos this year. The band performs the show at football game halftime, and they competed with it in Fredericksburg Saturday. They placed second in the 4A division.
Band director Eduardo Zambrano chose the theme because he was inspired by the idea of honoring passed loved ones.
“Post COVID we did have a lot of loss, whether it was family or friends or just in the community,” Zambrano said.
The previous two years have had darker themes: “Witching Hour” and “Fallen Angel,” to shed light on darker themes and bring awareness to significant events.
The music is from the movie Coco.
Zambrano has made it his job to make memories and an impact in the form of art itself. He encourages band students to play with their heart and feel the music in their bones as if they were living the music.
Junior Sandra Tamayo-Duran plays baritone in the marching band. She said the show’s meaning has made an impact on people not just in the band, but families and friends.
“It’s one of those sweet reminders that the person that you have is always going to be there,” she said.
Tamayo-Duran said in Mexican culture ofrendas are a big part in remembering family through the years.
In this year’s show, Zambrano made the decision to have props symbolize ofrendas and altars. The props have ofrendas pictured on them with vibrant colors representing the life celebrated.
