Three wrestlers will compete at the State Wrestling competition in Houston today and Saturday.

I feel super excited knowing we have kids in the State tournament representing Lampasas,” coach Donovan Kleckner said.

The wrestlers competing are sophomore Charlie Freese who placed second in regionals, junior Derrick Winfree who placed third in regionals, and sophomore Joey Roberts who placed fifth in regionals, making her an alternate for the State competition.

“ I look forward to coaching and seeing our wrestlers do their best on the biggest stage for UIL Wrestling,” Kleckner said. “I’m anxious to see if our alternate will be able to make it into the tournament or not.”

Wrestlers and coaches left around 8 a.m. yesterday in order to have time to practice, check into the hotel, attend a coaches meeting and have dinner together.

“It’s been fun and very interesting, and since it’s our first time going to something this important, a little nerve wrecking,” Freese said. “We’re all having a good time hanging out, warming up and wrestling. We are really getting to know each other better.”

Freese said she and her teammates are feeling “pretty good” about State.

“It’s a big deal and to know we’ve made it this far is amazing,” she said. “I think it’ll go pretty good, but we just have to wait and see.”
