The artists who go to the Grammys win a lot more than the small studios. Both artists and fans would benefit by there being more opportunities for lesser known musicians to receive more exposure at the Grammys.

The Grammys happened Feb. 5 with Harry Styles winning album of the year and Lizzo winning record of the year.

Most awards went to famous artists, but less well known artists should have a better chance of winning Grammys too.

Artists like Corb Lund who is a country artist should have a chance to win Grammys. The albums he’s made have had very good writing with songs like “Louis L’amour,” which is about how the west has changed over the last century and not in a good way. He tends to write amusing stories from his life which are relatable. His songs have meaning with heart and soul put into them. It’s not the same as the random words that most pop singers tend to string together.

If more diverse or less known artists won Grammys, more people could be exposed to new songs. People listen to songs that their friends recommend or that critics recommend but most people don’t pay attention to other award shows. Thus the same people win multiple times in 13 years. Taylor Swift won Grammys in 2010, 2016 and 2021. These artists are really famous with names like Adele and Bruno Mars winning.  They are followed by millions of people; it’s not like their fans are going to leave them. There are many good artists who have around 10,000 social media followers, and those are all artists who could win awards.

When Americana became a sub genre it was small studios making a place in the world. It made what was great about country music in the beginning, which isn’t the big studios winning any big awards. The artists who go to the Grammys win a lot more than the small studios. The big studios choose people who are often good looking. Sometimes people aren’t even chosen by talent. Yes, a lot of them have talent, but most of the time it’s auto-tuned so no one can  actually tell who has a good voice and who doesn’t.

Both artists and fans would benefit by there being more opportunities for lesser known musicians to receive more exposure at the Grammys. The artist Bonnie Raitte winning song of the year was a great start, but the Grammys can still improve. This shows that smaller artists make great music and can win these awards.
