Lady Badger softball began yesterday with a game against Lake Belton High School. The Lady Badgers lost 0-16. They will play in the Llano tournament tomorrow through Saturday.

Junior Caitlin Sanguinet started on the pitcher’s mound yesterday and had three strikeouts. Junior Harley Wakeman closed last night’s game on the mound and had two strikeouts.

“This will be my second year on varsity,” Wakeman said. “Playing helps me with stress relief, and I feel like we have really bonded great with each other this year.”

Junior Mia Maldonado had a perfect night at the plate with one single and one double.  Following her was sophomore Kali Hunter and junior Alycia Cantu who were both 1-2 batting.

“We are in a new district this year,” softball coach Jessica Harborth said. “The season will look different but our girls will do good and continue working as hard as ever.”

Being transferred to a new district added more travel time for the games. The closest game will be over an hour away.

“The girls worked hard last year and unfortunately the season got cancelled before district due to COVID,” Harborth said. “The girls didn’t get that last vital part of their season, but they came back this fall, worked hard and are ready for the 2021 season.”

There are 11 varsity returners this year. According to the coach it is an amazing amount of returners.

“I am ready for the season to begin,” the lone senior on varsity Rose Mcanally said. “I feel that this season will be good considering all the variety of players and personality we have throughout the teams.”

For many girls on the team their top goal is to make it out as district champs.

The team mantra is that “If you are going to do it, give it 100% with a good attitude and all your effort.” Another goal of the team is to fight through adversity with grace.

“If I could say one thing to the underclassmen, it would be to take every season in,” Mcanally said. “Even if the season isn’t the best or you’re not enjoying it, it will go by fast and before you know it, you will be the senior on your last season.”
