Senior Flames colonel MaKayla Turner traveled alongside Flames and dance director Shelby Hodnett to Houston on Jan. 17- 19 to attend the TDEA (Texas Dance Educators Association) Conference. It was a way for both of them to learn new dance techniques and a fun trip for both of them.

Turner has been part of the Flames team since her freshman year but has had a passion for dancing since a young age. Turner was excited to travel alongside Hodnett to expand her knowledge of dance.

“It was overall a really fun experience and I enjoyed meeting other dancers,” Turner said. “Getting to dance alongside some of the best dancers in Texas is such an honor and I’m really glad I got to be part of the experience.”

This is the fifth year Hodnett has attended TDEA, and she said she enjoys attending. It helps Hodentt create new ideas for her dance classes and the Flames.

“When I go to these conferences, I feel really rejuvenated for the next year, as well as gives me ideas for lesson planning, tips and tricks for the team, as well as my dance lessons,” Hodnett said.

TDEA is a conference which is held for the dance instructor and the selected dancer. They become more educated on dance techniques, as well as an opportunity for the student to earn a scholarship. TDEA offers scholarships which are available by submitting an essay. Turner did not place for a scholarship.

“It was overall a really fun and tiring  experience,” Turner said. “I got to dance with some really amazing dancers as well as make new friends. I was really nervous to attend at first, but once I got to dance with the rest of the people there, it was definitely one of the best dance experiences.”
