With the turf under his feet, Brady Mayfield sprints across the goal line while the cheerleaders and fans roar with excitement.

“Brady is an athlete,” Mayfield’s mother Dawn Mayfield said. “He has been involved in Special Olympics Football.  He has played baseball with Centex Champs for four seasons. He’s also been involved in Buddy Ball Basketball and Bowling. He played football for Belton Middle School in 7th grade,” Ms. Mayfield said. “As a student athlete at LHS, Brady was involved with Powerlifting in 2016-2017 – training every afternoon from January to May. Any Central Texas student athletes with disabilities were invited.”

Brady also said he was really excited to get to go and play.

“I had a good time out there and it was really fun,” Brady said. “I like playing sports a lot.”

Ms. Mayfield said Brady was very excited to play football.

“ In my experience, the general public is unaware that students with special needs have the same dreams, desires, and aspirations as anyone,” Ms. Mayfield said. “Having an organization like UMHB acknowledge that by inviting student athletes to have their chance in the limelight is what stands out to me.  You can see what it meant to Brady through the photograph that was captured as he crossed the end-zone!”

Brady said he liked all of the people who were there as well.

“Everyone was really cool,” Brady said. “I got along with all of the people.”

Ms. Mayfield said that Brady can do many athletic events when someone takes time to teach him.

“Brady is capable of doing so many things and in this community, he has gotten connected with people who are willing to invest the time in him.  That gives him the opportunities he gets,” Ms. Mayfield said.  “Coach John Rogers; Coach Naragon; Coach Johnson; and Coach Brister have been phenomenal coaches!   He and I are both grateful for the direction, encouragement, correction, and even the cheers Brady receives from his coaches and peers!”

Brady Mayfield has participated in many sports in his life. In the future, that list of athletic activities will most likely grow. Brady is capable of playing any sport he sets his mind to.
