As a result of students performing well at the meet, the school came home as the District 24-4A Runner-Up Academic Champions.
“We compete in a very tough academic district, so ALL success deserves to be celebrated,” UIL coordinator Judith Ann McGhee said in an email sent to administrators and the local paper.
60 students competed at the UIL district meet on March 25 and 26, with 18 of those students and 4 UIL coaches advancing to regionals April 25.
“The entire Academic Team – even the students who worked hard but didn’t place 1st – 6th – is a huge part of the good things happening at LHS, and I’m thrilled to give them (and their coaches) a little of the credit they deserve,” Mcghee said.
Students participating in UIL events train in various ways all throughout the year to prepare for district.
“These young people, led by some truly amazing coaches, have been working on their events since August – they attend regular practices, invitational tournaments, and virtual meets throughout the school year,” McGhee said in the previously mentioned email.
Some students think that this year UIL is more competitive due to the inclusion of Salado within the district.
“This new competition will make us better prepared for regionals, and I look forward to competing against Saledo again at regionals,” junior Cale Wheeler said.
