The first official track meet was Feb. 28, and coach Cory Warner said the runners have been working hard to prepare.
“I try to keep the athletes motivated by allowing them to have fresh legs throughout the week and changing up workouts daily,” Warner said. “It’s still really early in the season, but we’re having to work through some soreness right now.”
Track meets are typically on Thursdays, with the exception of one meet on Saturday, March 22.
“We practice Monday through Wednesday, have meets on Thursday, and rest on Friday,” Warner said. “A typical sprinter practice we run anywhere between 600 and 800 meters/day before we go to any specialty.”
A previous meet scheduled for Feb. 20 was cancelled due to the cold weather.
“The canceled meet did not affect us in any way,” Warner said. “We will not reschedule or make up for that missed meet. Our schedule is currently full.”
Senior Ava Speichert runs the 800 with an average time of two and a half minutes.
“My most memorable part of the season is seeing all my friends at practice,” Speichert said. “I am cherishing every moment with them before I head off to college.”
Speichert hopes to get her time under two minutes and enjoy her last track season.
“Being involved with sports, it gives me a sense of stability with a routine,” Speichert said. “I’ve seen my drive to run better grow and to push through injury and cold weather.”
Sophomore Tristan Cancel runs the 800 with a time of two minutes and sixteen seconds, but his goal is to run 2:10.
“I get ready for the meets by a lot of Icy Hot and a lot of carbs,” Cancel said.
As the season has gone on, Warner said athletes are getting better at understanding their coaches’ expectations.
“We have had one ‘dual meet’ with Cove,” Warner said. “It was cold that night, but it went well.”
Cancel said he focused on football over the summer, so he didn’t get much track practice in, but he’s getting back into a running routine.
“I’m starting to get the feel of things again, and it’s nice that it’s warm outside again,” Cancel said. “From the beginning of the season, I have faster times, and I feel like I can run farther distances.”
