The track and field team is competing in Copperas Cove today in their first meet of the season.
“One thing I am looking forward to this year is the number of upperclassmen we will have out on the track in comparison to years past,” head track coach Cory Warner said.
Practices have been going strong so far in the season. Warner said the one major goal is he wants all athletes to have the mindset where they are there to compete and give it their all at every meet.
“I want to see events be successful, but if there is one event that has my heart, it is the Mile Relay,” Warner said. “It’s the last event of the night and all eyes are on you.”
The strategy Warner teaches all athletes is that “less is more”.
“Athletes need to be at their best on meet days, so making sure their legs are fresh is our main goal,” Warner said.
Sophomore Brandin Cooper said he wants to succeed in the 400 meter dash to gauge his involvement in track.
“The fastest I’ve ever run is a 52.9 second lap,” Cooper said. “My personal goal is to be faster in the 400 meter dash and be consistent.”
While the season is still early, there still lies success in the team along with a hopeful future for all athletes.
“My only personal goal is to be a great role model for the young men and women on the track team,” Warner said.
