The boys powerlifting season is off to a great start with athletes breaking records and goals being set high. Girls and boys powerlifting lift today at San Saba.
Senior Deegan Norwood said his favorite part of powerlifting is bench press because he broke the record at the home competition. Norwood competed Jan. 23 and broke the record lifting 370 lbs.
“We come in here and [coaches] have a workout on the board, but usually I do my own stuff,” Norwood said.
Powerlifters practice Monday through Thursday excluding Wednesdays for powerlifting meets. Fridays are considered rest days.
Boys’ powerlifting coach David Brister said he encourages his athletes by being positive.
“They can gain some self confidence so that they can do a good job,” Brister said.
Junior Carter Kuhn has been powerlifting since sophomore year. His personal goal for the powerlifting season is to improve his bench press, squat and deadlift. He currently benches 335 lbs and is working to lift 350 lbs. He is hoping to improve his squat from 485 lbs to 500 lbs. Kuhn aims to deadlift 500 lbs this season.
His favorite moment so far this season was talking to the other teams at previous competitions.
Kuhn practices after school and looks at the monitor in the weightroom to see which workouts are set for the day.
“Coach [Brister] does a good job of rotating exercises in and out,” Kuhn said.
Kuhn said his favorite part of powerlifting is lifting with his friends.
“All of the people I lift with makes it a whole lot easier because they’re all fun,” Kuhn said.
