Varsity girls’ soccer earned their first win of the season with a score of 3-1 against Shoemaker Jan. 17.
“My favorite part of the season is building strong connections with the girls,”JV soccer coach Stephanie Vanliew said. “We have an amazing group of athletes, and it’s been exciting to see their dedication and teamwork. I’m also thrilled that we have the opportunity to have a JV team this year!”
The current varsity record is 1-6.
“Last season, we scored one goal, and this year, we’ve already scored [more],” Vanliew said. “Our girls are working hard to pass more effectively and support each other on the field. Additionally, some players have stepped up to learn new positions, which has been a great testament to their versatility and commitment to growth.”
Sophomore Sophia Storm said this season has been productive.
“My favorite part of this season so far was at one of our games, [junior] Kelbie [Black] scored, and everyone got very excited and ran to hug her,” Storm said.
Storm said the team has had to adjust to injuries and bad weather conditions, but they have all made big improvements.
“At the second game our only keeper got injured and we had to put inexperienced players in the goal which wasn’t easy,” Storm said.
Storm said their manager ended up filling in for their keeper.
“We’ve improved a lot and are starting to build a lot of chemistry together,” senior Hailey Palmer said.
Palmer said she is playing a new position this year.
“It’s been a challenge but I’ve learned to be confident and trust my teammates because I know they have me if I mess up,” Palmer said.
Palmer’s favorite part of this season so far has been getting so close to everyone and watching all of the girls improve by the day.
“I’ve seen improvement in myself,” Palmer said. “I am less nervous and I have been more confident in myself and it’s helped me a lot.”
Sophomore Charmaine Dane said she has gotten better with communicating with her teammates and having chemistry with people on the field.
“I think one of our biggest challenges, personally, and as a team, is getting angry with each other on the field,” Dane said. “We often get frustrated and take it out on our teammates.”
Dane said her favorite part of this season has been the bus rides to and from the games.
“This season has been challenging, but I love how close the entire team is with each other,” Dane said. “It makes the hard parts of soccer much more enjoyable.”
