The crowd roars as the point guard sinks a three-pointer. Her 1000th point.
During the Hamilton tournament Nov. 22, senior Addison Borchardt scored her 1000th point playing for the Lampasas Badgers. Borchardt has been playing basketball since second grade. This year, she is co-captain with senior Chloe Thorp.
“[Scoring] felt really good because it was a close game, and I hit a three in a girl’s face,” Borchardt said. “I wasn’t really thinking about it at the moment until the game was over.”
The girl’s won their game, 43-35, celebrating with Borchardt afterwards.
“I’ve seen her grow so much this year,” basketball coach Marcus Chapa said. “As far as player development goes, her parents have done an amazing job in putting her in situations where she can grow as a player. Not to mention, her leadership skills have vastly improved this year. She’s really taking initiative and working hard to leave a legacy that the younger girls can look up to.”
Bochardt credits her parents with being her greatest supporters.
“They have been through my basketball journey since day one,” she said.
The girl’s season had a rough start, with many players getting injured and having to step down.
“We had a lot of big injuries,” Chapa said. “A lot of kids had to step up, but every year is a different year. Those players are growing, and we have some pretty seasoned girls. Those girls are leading and we’re putting everything together and getting ready for District.”
Despite their shaky beginning, the girls have stayed strong and been each other’s rock.
“My team has affected me in so many ways,” Borchardt said. “They are always positive and supportive towards not only me, but one another, so that positivity goes a long way.”
Their positivity and love for the sport has been a crucial part of this season.
“The girls are great,” Chapa said. “They work hard, they come back everyday and it’s a clean slate. They show up to work and do what they need to do. We are chasing excellence and achievements, and trying to understand that process as a team. It’s been kind of a rough season so far, but we’re dropping to teams that are state ranked. It’s all just part of the journey. Adversity is part of the journey.”
