The cosmetology program is preparing students to take their state board test to become licensed cosmetologists. Those with 900 hours can register for the written exam, and then once achieving 1000 hours, students can take the hands-on exam.

Once a student passes both exams, they are issued a cosmetology license.

“Although it’s a lot of work, it’s very exciting to know that they are close to becoming licensed professionals,” cosmetology teacher Christine Hearn said.

To earn the necessary hours, Cosmetology courses 1 and 2 are required, and Intro. To Cosmetology class is optional.

“I am really excited to be able to work with clients and help them with their hair,” senior Ruby Parra said.

Once licensed, students are able to start apprenticing at a salon and eventually start a job in the field.

“I think it’s a great way for students who want to learn more about cosmetology,” senior Mindy Montgomery said. “I am big on free quality education and I think it is cool that they offer that to the students.”

Seeing the impact that the cosmetology program has on students, proves how much the industry can affect people.

“By building confidence in their abilities and repeating procedures step by step, students will feel more comfortable with their skills and be able to pass their needed exams to become licensed professionals,” Hearn said.
