Girls basketball scrimmages to be held at the high school gym Oct. 31 were cancelled the Friday before due to COVID-19 reasons.

“I was told by the Lampasas County Health Inspector to cancel the scrimmage,” girls basketball head coach Mark Myers said.

This game was supposed to be the start of the season for the varsity team, but now it will be pushed back to tomorrow in the gym against Eastview.

“I was upset about the scrimmage getting cancelled, but it’s better that this got cancelled instead of a district game,” junior varsity member Rebekah Pearce said.

Myers contacted parents as soon as he got word that the scrimmages needed to be cancelled.

“I was told to cancel around 11 p.m. on Friday night,” Myers said. “We let all players and families know that night.”

The team’s first away game will be Nov. 10 at McGregor High School. Their first district game will be Jan. 2 at home.

“I’m excited to see how we are going to do this season with being in a new district,” Pearce said. “This season will be a little tougher without some of the key players we had last year, but I have faith and believe that we will all be able to step up to the plate and win some games.”

A minor setback provokes a major comeback and that’s the plan the girls have this year, according to Pearce.

“Losing the scrimmage hurts us but we will move forward and just keep working to get better,” Myers said. “This is going to be another very good basketball team!”
